Naming, Market Positioning, Brand Identity, Design

Canteen TV is a curated online entertainment channel, specialising in good food and drink. Hosting an array of films and editorial, Canteen champions both education and entertainment in equal measure. Our identity is inspired by the energy, humour and warmth of a buzzing food hall, cafe or restaurant. Positioned as a European take on the conglomerate food channels of the US, the typographic choices were made to reflect some of the busy, irregular aesthetics of European streets and cafe signage. This is reflected in the inconsistent stroke widths of the characters in Knockout Heviweight, our primary typeface.
Canteen hosts an array of content, ranging from the newest innovations in food and drink and how to tutorials, to specialist series with celebrity chefs and comedians. We were tasked to create a scaling identity that could bend to support the needs of the content; flexing to either higher or lower brow through a varied typographic system. This flexibility is captured through a kinetic grid system that supports motion first and foremost, considering the output of much of Canteen’s work, alongside brand 'animation styles’ that capture Canteen’s energy.
We were tasked with designing the website in such a way to host a range of both written and film content, seamlessly integrating the two. We designed a variable way of arranging content that echoed the approach to typography by allowing staggered arrangements. Canteen TV is set to launch in 2022.
